The following year she enrolled in a writing course and began to write fiction featuring strong female heroines, mostly because she hadn’t found many books about women she could relate to. Pierce sold her first story, true-confession ‘‘What We Did Was Sin’’, in 1967 while a junior in college. She studied psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1977 with a degree in liberal arts. Tamora Pierce was born Decemin southwest Pennsylvania, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and Pennsylvania.
